PEI Homeschoolers Science, Heritage Fairs,
Art & Craft Expo

Let us know at email:
 peihomeschoolers@gmail.com
if any
homeschooling students
would like to take part in our
PEI Homeschoolers Science and Heritage Fairs 2013
See details at

and possibly take part in the
Provincial Heritage Fair.

The PEI Homeschoolers Fairs
usually take place in mid-February.
The date for our Fair will be confirmed if there is any interest.

Below is information forwarded by
Charlotte Stewart Provincial
Heritage Fair Co-ordinator

Provincial Heritage Fair 2013
Plans are underway for the 2013 Provincial Heritage Fair which will be held at Confederation Centre of the Arts, Charlottetown on Thursday, 16 May 2013.
During the 2011-2012 school year, close to 3,000 students from grades 5 to 9 in 27 schools across the Island explored Canada’s heritage by taking part in Heritage Fairs.  Of these students,  166 were selected to present their projects at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in May 2012 during the Provincial Heritage Fair.
The 2012 Provincial Fair finalists participated, along with 200 students across Canada, in a new national program, Young Citizens / Jeunes citoyens.  Twelve students attended a video production workshop presented by the Island Media Arts Coop.  The students produced and uploaded videos on their heritage fair project themes to YoungCitizens.ca and voting took place over the summer months.  Two PEI students were selected among the 30 national finalists : Cassie Doiron, North Rustico, Gulf Shore Consolidated for her video <Attrapé dans le passé : la pêche aux homards> and Sydney Rennie of Alberton Elementary for his video “Nursing Past”.  Six students, of the 30 finalists, will be selected to attend the Governor General’s History Awards at Rideau Hall, Ottawa in December and will show their video during the National History Forum.  The videos are available for viewing at www.youngcitizens.ca
The Heritage Fair Program is a wonderful way for students to explore any aspect of Canadian heritage using the medium of their choice to tell stories and share information.  By participating in the Heritage Fair Program, students develop their ability to learn independently and to present information effectively -  skills which prepare them for the future as they develop an appreciation for the past.

Having your School Fair in mid-February is a great way to celebrate National Heritage Week!
Please note the following due dates when planning the date of your school fair:
Your representatives for the Provincial Heritage Fair must be selected by 19 April 2013 and individual student registration/permission forms are due by 29 April 2013.

 Entries to be submitted by
June 8, 2013

For details see
www.quiltingb.ca

2010 and 2011 winners were Homeschoolers!
           See  www.quiltingb.ca  for details.

Hi
Let me introduce myself, my name is Suzanne Lane, owner of Quilting B & More, an Island owned and operated business for the past 20 years that sells quilting and sewing supplies, fabric, sewing machines and many other items. We are PEI's largest sewing machine dealer and the Island's only Authorized Singer Dealer and Service Center. During the past five years we have been running a sewing contest called "Sew Much Fun". The objective of the contest is to get island youth interested in sewing which has been part of the island culture and appears to be disappearing within our youth community. The contest is free to enter, no obligation to purchase anything, just to sew something and have fun doing it. The winner will be selected randomly, so everyone who enters has the same opportunity to win a new sewing machine. Feel free to forward this information to any colleague.
Last year the winner of the "Sew Much Fun" contest was Kelly McKeough a grade 8 student from École François-Buote.
I hope that you will support us in promoting the art of sewing with your students. Should you have any question regarding this contest please feel free to contact me at 628-1998 or Please visit our website at www.quiltingb.ca
P.S. We offer a 10% discount to students who buy supplies for sewing classes (home economics).

Harvest is taking place
after two weeks of very wet weather.

Two windrowers discharge
in the space between two rows...

...so the harvester can pick up eight rows at a time...

....and load the crop into trucks...

...making a full load...

...of beautiful potatoes,
good for eating or for french fries...

...which are unloaded in the warehouse,
safe for the winter...

...while the seagulls make the most of it, finding worms
in the soft, newly disturbed ground!

GED - For Homeschooled Students

One solution for the need of a Grade 12 Diploma......

Our children are in Senior High School level or have completed Grade 12.
They are registered with the Department of Education as homeschooling students.
The Department makes available to us learning materials that are used in the local schools.

In our homeschooling program we have been using some of these textbooks
that are used in the local schools' academic programs, especially in Math, Sciences,
Chemistry, Physics and Biology, and as well, some of the History texts.
In addition, we have used learning materials from a variety of other sources,
especially library resources - books, CDs, DVDs, and in the last year, the Internet.

We have not followed a program that gives credits for courses or levels completed in the various subjects.
They children have not had testing, and they do not have credits for the work they have done.
We have kept records of all our childrens' school work over the years,
including informal non-school learning and projects and activities.

One of our boys - Gregory - has applied for the Military Reserve.
He was told that he needed to have Grade 12 credits or a Diploma from
an institution or the Department of Education.
Our records of school work completed were not sufficient for their purposes.
We were told that a GED Diploma would be acceptable.

We enquired about this of the Department of Education;
they were quite helpful, in directing us to the GED program; that it has been used
by other homeschooling students, in order to obtain the necessary Diploma
for entrance into post-secondary courses or institutions,
or simply to have a Diploma as proof that the work was done.

The GED program is available to students 18 years of age and older.
They can prepare for the exams by writing tests which are similar to the actual exams;
this enables them to work on weak areas.  There are booklets of several levels in each of the subject areas
that can be used to prepare for the test, and the instructors are very available and helpful
to provide any guidance needed.

Because Gregory had actually done the work at home to achieve Grade 12, it required
only three or four weeks at three days a week at the local Learning Centre,
to be very well prepared for the exams.

The exams are scheduled to take place on a preset two days, in Charlottetown.
You must be registered for them ahead of time.
The results are known in one to two weeks of having written the test.
You can also obtain the score of how well you did on each test.
In case of failure of a test, it can be rewritten at a later date, as many times as necessary.

This test is standardized across the U.S.A. and Canada.
